Pastoral Care

“It was He (Christ) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists,

and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the

body of Christ may be built up until we all reach the unity of the faith in the knowledge of the

Son of God and become mature, attaining the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” Eph.

4:11-13. Jesus Christ, after He ascended to fill the whole universe, gave five essential personal

functional gifts to build up the church. Each gift functions in that ministry as well as develops

others in that same gift, in this case other pastors, as well as may operate in a personal

secondary gift as a teacher or one of the other three gifts. The pastor primarily loves and takes

care of the sheep, the families and individuals under his care, and I believe raises up and

mentors others who become pastors as many are needed to care for the whole flock. Jesus

pastored twelve and lost one but we many times struggle to be able to care for seven to nine

families or individuals. Good pastoring requires confrontation, accountability, love, care and

training. Small groups can be helpful as well as individual meetings one on one at a meal or time

separated specifically. A best rule is men w/men and women w/women. Hopefully you can

work yourself out of responsibility by raising up other pastors and just caring for them and they

care for the others.
