Discipleship & Mentoring

Updated: Aug 10, 2022

Is our purpose to only accept and confess Christ as our Savior and become Christians OR is it to

be His disciples? God’s purpose is to produce the Character of Jesus Christ in each one of us.

Becoming a Christian makes us into a new creation now with God’s Holy Spirit living in us and

we are holy before God the Father because we are covered and protected with the blood

sacrificed by His Son and we become His sons and daughters. How does God form us into His

disciples beyond just becoming Christians? Through the teaching of the principles of Jesus

Christ’s teaching; the teaching of the inspired authors and Apostles; the History of God’s dealing

with Israel, the teaching and writings of the Old Testament of Moses, Prophets and many other

inspired authors. God, through His church, has given faithful pastors and teachers to instruct,

interpret, guide and mentor. There needs to be accountability in order to go or else we try to

avoid the discipline and discomfort. Learning from teaching is only as good as the practice that is

completed with mentoring coming alongside, interpretation and oversight of actual events and

situations. Romans 5:3,4 guides us through a difficult growth process: tribulation (sufferings)

perseverance, character, faith, & hope. We all need to have accountability through

relationships with healthy, experienced and mature Christian mentors to help us grow, identify

our weaknesses, interpret why we have past pain causing bad behavior in the present, and

speak into our lives with wisdom and discernment. This type of mentoring produces healthy and

mature disciples.
